The question is how much 80s can you pack into a tune before it just overflows all over the place like a can of artificial cherry syrup. XD

lol I didn't know you were on NGs. Unless this is a doppelganger account. Cool beans if it's really you though. : ) Not much to realistically critique. Your work is pretty darn "period" accurate and well done.

Whitewoods responds:

this isn't a doppleganger, just posted some songs here so a listener could use it in their game. appreciate the encouragment :)

Synth lead is getting squashed by compression pumping from what sounds like the bass and kick. If that's intentional ok, but it would feel a lot more chill without the pumping. Other than that, very nice track. I like it.

Good elements. Needs a little more mixing. Metallic part of the percussion that starts at 0:19 and continues till 1:25 is very loud in the mix. Your clap starting at 0:28 through 0:47 is also loud. Like, you'd expect a very forward clap like that in a high energy genre but not atmospheric ambient like this. When you bring the clap back in at 2:05, it's not a problem because it's better balanced with the tune do to there being more volume in general at that part of the tune, so it blends better.

Nice ambient effect at 1:55. I like the delayed arp sound you have that starts at 0:29 and appears again in other parts of the tune. The percussion at 1:29 through 1:45 is very nice. Good satisfying sound on that one. The glass clink sounds added to it at 1:45 are loud. very nice pads/melody at 2:30. I like how this piece evolves. That linear through form evolution is very important to keeping things interesting, particularly in atmospheric music genres. Round 2:33 through 3:02 you bring in some sort of buzzy lead playing an ascending arp line. I think a different type of synth patch would be better suited. The one you used, kinda sounds like it belongs in a house mix.

I see you are using that tongue drum sound. This is a great application for it. It gives some warmth and beauty to balance out what is a pretty melancholy piece of music.

One last rather insignificant thing. Don't leave your tune's thumb blank. It just looks so much better when it's filled with something eye catching. Also a blank thumb makes it look less professional.

LostChronology responds:

Thanks for the extensive review! :)

I tried to change some of the things which you pointed out, but I don't understand what you mean with the last thing of leaving the "thumb blank", could you explain this in PM or on Discord?

Very sexy and sweet. The lyrics are kinda conceptually heavy for the style of music. Not that the lyrics aren't good. They are very thought provoking. It's just, I think I kinda like it better not knowing what she's saying, so I can imagine happier more light hearted things lol. Melodies are pretty but typically generic. It's pop though, so, it's pretty much a requirement. Gets stuck in your head like INSTANTLY, so, it succeeds in being pop.

Production sounds good.

I REALLY like how sparse the beat track is. I expected it to go into a typical beat-centric style but it stayed nice and open and I think it better serves the warm watery feel of the tune. It's kind of a bold choice for pop but I'm all for it. I REALLY don't like the auto tune and don't take that personally. I am just SO burned out on hearing that wobbly auto tune stuff. An un-auto-tuned vocal track would have taken this from great to epic but I understand.

Troisnyx responds:

Thank you kindly for the feedback 💖

Re: lyrics, I have long been influenced by Mylène Farmer — she writes thought-provoking lyrics over peppy pop songs, so there's a chasm of sorts between the music and the words.

Understood about the Autotune; it was just a fun thing for me to try.

Very chillicious.

Could have used less preamp/compression. Open up the mix, give more room for the verb on that great sparkle arp you got there. Cool track though regardless. : )

pitbulljones responds:

jesus christ! you went deep. this is nearly a teenager ha

Always new, never normal. Nice track.

It's not house for sure. This is much more psy-trance territory IMO. It's a cool track. I just wish it wasn't so compressed. Makes it sound very boxy and confined. Like it wants a nice open sound to the delay/verb but it just doesn't have the room.

Geekygami responds:

Rectified the genre to reflect it as accurately as possible
(We really need more genres to choose from)

It's an entirely dry mix, there isn't any reverb anywhere.
I went specifically for a dry mix.
If I added reverb anywhere I'd most likely have it sidechained so that it'd be ducked by most everything, which would leave it about in the same place as the pad you hear in the back.
Admittedly I was debating whether to put some reverb on the snares but opted against that.
I felt the snares being dry, rough and abrupt was more what I was looking for.

Something akin to the vibe you get from tracker .MODs y'know
